Industrial Serial-to-Ethernet Gateway — RS232/RS485 TCP/IP

Convert RS232 and RS485 to Ethernet TCP/IP using an industrial serial-to-Ethernet gateway: Virtual COM port, Modbus RTU→TCP, DIN rail, industrial applications.

Quick answer
A industrial serial-to-Ethernet gateway converts the links RS232 and RS485 in TCP/IP Ethernet, allowing you to access your serial devices from the local network or the cloud. It can operate in Virtual COM port (the application thinks it is communicating with a local serial port), in Modbus RTU → TCP or in transparent mode, as needed.

Why Use an Industrial Serial-to-Ethernet Gateway?

Serial industrial devices (RS232, RS485) are designed for direct connections over short distances with local software. In modern architectures, the monitoring software is often located on a centralized server, a remote PC, or in the cloud. The serial-to-Ethernet gateway acts as a bridge that enables this transition without requiring changes to field equipment.

Typical applications:

  • Extend RS485 equipment from the control cabinet to the LAN (up to 100 m via Ethernet vs. a maximum of 1,200 m via RS485, but with full network connectivity)
  • Centralize multiple RS485 buses from different buildings onto a single IP network
  • Modernize a PC-based SCADA system by replacing PCI serial cards with network gateways
  • Migrate an RS232 application to a client-server architecture without modifying the software

Operating Modes

An industrial serial-to-Ethernet gateway supports several modes depending on the application:

Virtual COM Port (VCP) Mode

The VCP driver installed on the PC creates a virtual COM port. The application remains unchanged; it still believes it is communicating with a physical serial port.

SCADA Application, VCP Driver, RS485 Gateway Network
────────────── ────────── ─────── ────────── ──────
COM5 Writing ──► TCP Encapsulation ──► Ethernet ──► Decapsulation ──► RS485 Bus
COM5 Read ◄── Decapsulate ◄── Ethernet ◄── Encapsulate ◄── RS485 bus

Modbus RTU → TCP Mode (gateway)

The gateway receives Modbus TCP requests (port 502) and converts them to serial Modbus RTU. The software uses Modbus TCP directly without an additional driver.

Transparent Mode (TCP Raw)

The gateway opens a TCP socket on a configured port. All data received by the socket is sent to the serial port, and vice versa. This is the most flexible mode for proprietary protocols.

UDP Mode

For applications requiring broadcasting or low overhead, the gateway can operate using UDP. Delivery is not guaranteed, but latency is minimal.

Examples of Compatible Devices

Serial-to-Ethernet gateways allow you to connect a wide variety of devices:

Meters and Analyzers

  • Electric energy meters (Eastron SDM, Janitza, SOCOMEC) via RS485 Modbus
  • Gas analyzers (Vaisala, Drager) via RS232
  • Industrial water meters (Zenner, Sensus) via RS485

PLCs and Controllers

  • Temperature controllers (Eurotherm, Jumo) via RS485 Modbus
  • Compact PLCs (Siemens LOGO!, Schneider Zelio) via RS232
  • Drives (Danfoss, SEW Eurodrive) via RS485 Modbus

Measuring Instruments

  • Industrial scales (Mettler-Toledo, ADAM) via RS232
  • Pressure and temperature sensors with serial output
  • Coriolis flow meters (Endress+Hauser) via RS485

Integration into an IIoT Architecture

The serial-to-Ethernet gateway integrates into modern IIoT architectures as a local conversion layer:

Cloud-Based Industrial LAN Equipment
───────────────── ─────────────── ──────
RS485 Bus A ──► Gateway ──► Dashboard
RS485 Bus B ──► Gateway ──► Switch ──► Gateway ──► Alerts
RS232 equipment ──► Gateway ──► Ethernet IIoT 4G LTE API

For sites with existing Ethernet infrastructure, the serial-to-Ethernet gateway is the first step in modernization. It integrates with the Eziwan IIoT gateway, which then handles the secure cloud connection.
